Practitioner Wellbeing Training: Enhancing Brain Health for our Frontline Human Service Practitioners

Local Human Service Sector practitioners took an intentional pause recently to focus on their personal wellbeing and brain health, to enable them to help and serve others in the incredible work they do every day for improved community wellbeing.

Sheryl Batchelor from Yiliyapinya Indigenous Corporation, returned to Gladstone in November following the Gladstone Region Childhood Builders Training Series delivered earlier this year, to guide local frontline Human Service practitioners on a journey that delved into Brain Health Science (neuroscience) to better understand their own brain and the impact of stress.

Participants gained actionable insights on how to proactively care for their brain health by embedding positive habits into daily routines, especially when at their busiest.

Participants found value in learning about the effectiveness of cognitive breaks to refresh the mind to enhance productivity and mental clarity, and the powerful connection between brain and body, in particular the influence of the hormonal system on brain function and emotional regulation.

Sources of stress were identified and unpacked to practice the process of reframing the way a situation or person is perceived and responded to, in a way that creates less stress. Examples such as feelings of frustration were explored to frame how frustration caused by experiencing or learning something new, can be embraced as a good sign that change, and growth is occurring.

Practitioners shared that the specialised learning paired with applied practice through scenarios and shared stories across professional and personal settings, was a highlight of the training. With greater self-awareness and skills, practitioners were energised to apply and share their learnings to improve the way they work with others and help build positive outcomes for parents and children.

Practitioner Wellbeing Training, part of the Sector Capacity Building Initiative, will return in 2025 in response to high interested by sector practitioners who participated in the Childhood Builders. Childhood Builders highlighted the importance of supporting frontline roles to grow and maintain personal wellbeing, to foster safe and supportive connections for improved child and family wellbeing.
